Female Discharge:

Female Discharge:
What Is That Female Discharge?
Do you ever feel a bit of dampness in your underwear and think it's your period, only to find a white or yellowish spot on your underwear? This is vaginal discharge and it's totally normal.

You see, your body produces this female discharge to cleanse and moisten your vagina. And it's a good thing it does, because if the vaginal lining stayed dry, you would be susceptible to vaginal infections!

Female DischargeNormal Female Discharge
Normal discharge is clear, smooth, or creamy and has a very slight smell that can be described as sweet or soapy. Sometimes if it gets in your underwear and gets exposed to air it may turn a little crusty, but this is normal too. The only thing you should look out for is discharge that is itchy, irritating, discolored, or smelly, because this might be a sign of infection and a reason to see your doctor.

Female DischargeWhen Female Discharge Happens
You'll probably produce more discharge in the middle of your menstrual cycle a couple weeks after your period. This is when you're ovulating (your ovary is releasing an egg). If you're sexually active, you'll probably notice that when you're excited your body produces more discharge. This is your body's way of lubricating your vagina for intercourse.

Apparently, its not a big issue when you see this discharge. Have a blessed day.

Val's day: Celebrate it in an unusual way!

It's here again, it rolls in and out every year. What else could I be talking about on February 14? It's St. Valentine's day! Another season of love. The Val's day has been bastardized and abused by many of us out there by misconstruing it to be a day set aside mostly for romance and acts of immorality, but that is not my main focus this day.

My focus today shall be on the less privileged in our society. We see these people everyday yet we turn our backs to their pleas of mercy and cries for help. Many of us often forget to be grateful for what we have but become ungrateful for the things we wished we had. How sad!

In this sobriety of heart, I was pondering on what to write on a day like this for my dear esteemed readers. Fortunately, I stumbled on a friend's post on Instagram that completely expresses my concerns, defines the essence of this love feast amidst the myriads of challenges plaguing our nation and continent as a whole. Impoverishment, famine, hunger, corruption, child kidnappings, terrorism, civil unrest just to mention a few. How then should we celebrate Valentine this season?

Below is my friend's post that truly enunciates my opinion of this year,s Valentine...

"Yet girls will be crying for iPhone 6. Cry that you didn't get an LV bag for Val's. Cry that you got a B and not an A in some course. Cry that your friend drives a car and you don't. Cry because your girl left you. We cry for the wrongest reasons... I legit had tears in my eyes when I saw this pic. All we do is complain about what we don't have. Smh, you don't know how good you have it. No matter how tough it is for you, would you say you don't have it better than this woman and her poor baby? I got on my knees and cried to God for forgiveness, for every time I have complained and been ungrateful. I know where I'm spending my valentines day now, and it's not with any woman anywhere. It's at the Orphanage. Those are the people that need my love and my gifts".

Dear reader, those were the exact words of Sodimu Babajide ( an entrepreneur and personal friend, IG @kacksbysodi). He has succinctly expressed the true essence of valentine. Please I implore you to be grateful for what you have right now, life is beautiful. You might not spend your day at the orphanage as my friend and I would do on Val's day but you can make it worthwhile by showing love to the less privileged in your neighborhood. Used or new clothes, money, food materials, an act of kindness and respect, simple gift that could mean so much to another and many more!

Make more out of St. Valentine's day than you ever did! I'd love to read from you. Have a lovely Val celebrations!

World Cancer Day 2015: ‘Not beyond us’

Deep sighs! I lost my sleep and tranquility at the wee hours of the day, as I sat up straight on the edge of my bed meditating on the affairs of today. Then suddenly, I was alerted by the ding sound on my iPad, it was an email from one of my feeds alerting me about today's event.

I wouldn't delve into the nitty gritty of the cancer epidemic but rather, I want to use this medium to empathize with those who are affected by cancer. World Cancer Day is marked on February 4 to raise awareness of cancer and to encourage its prevention, early detection, and treatment. I call you survivors!

I've had my own fair share of some of the pains you go through; nonetheless I can only imagine the magnanimity of your perils as a fighter and survivor. The sting of cancer is eating deep into our society due to numerous technological advancements in dietary intakes and all. I am not here this day to tell you what you already know, neither am I here to dictate how to live your lives or condemn you from the unhealthy lifestyles you lived. I am here to give you a word of hope, encourage you to keep on fighting hard as long as you can.

I know sometimes you feel the world is not a beautiful place to live, you sometimes have feelings of doom and emptiness, at other times; you might feel like giving up and see no other justifiable reason to live. Dear Fighter and Survivor, life might still be beautiful when you see the rising sun and the dawning of each new day. Never give up! Today is your day, to celebrate and remind you about cancer awareness.

Before I go, I would like to say this; I've lost close relatives and friends fighting this cancer battle and I still have people with whom we fight their battles together through my presence, words of encouragement, financial and moral support and most importantly; my spiritual support. I remember you today and I can only pray to God that a miracle should happen in your lives.

Subsequently, my word of appeal goes out to those of you who do not even know your health status, I will never stop saying it, health is wealth! Get tested today! Cancer can be detected by certain signs and symptoms or by screening tests. It is typically further investigated by medical imaging and confirmed by biopsy. Early detection through screening is useful for cervical and colorectal cancer.

Although a preventable disease, cancer is indeed a human frightening and deadly medical condition that can occur in any essential organ in the body including stomach, lung, breast, kidney, liver, heart, eye, nose, skin, cervical, bone, brain, just to mention a few. Many cancerous growths can be prevented by not indulging in smoking, maintaining a healthy weight, not drinking too much alcohol, eating plenty of vegetables, fruits, and whole grains, being vaccinated against certain infectious diseases, not eating too much red meat, coupled with avoidance of regular exposure to sunlight and urban air pollution.

Cancer is usually treated with chemotherapy, radiation therapy, surgery, targeted therapy or sometimes, a combination of all. In a typical cancer treatment, pain and symptom management are an important and basic part of care. Palliative care is particularly recommended for patients suffering from advanced cancer condition.

Finally, the most prevalent and common cancers are; Lung and Prostrate Cancer in males, Breast and Cervical Cancer in females. Ladies should ensure to check their breasts every morning, check for abnormal changes in colour, size, lumps etc and report to a doctor immediately you observe anything strange. The chance of surviving a cancer is greater if it’s detected early enough. Men should also check for pains in their lower abdominal regions and go for regular medical checkups.

With love,

AVIAN INFLUENZA (Bird Flu): BEWARE!

As a blogger, I'm often faced with the challenge of what to write and when to write. At other times, the urgency of an event would prompt the writer. The outbreak of bird flu in over 10 states in Nigeria has made it urgent, imminent and important to discuss the disease with my esteemed readers.

Bird flu, also called avian influenza, is a viral respiratory disease mainly of poultry and certain other bird species, including migratory waterbirds, some imported pet birds, and ostriches, that can be transmitted directly to humans. The first known cases in humans were reported in 1997, when an outbreak in poultry in Hong Kong led to severe illness in 18 people, one-third of whom died. Between 2003 and late 2005, outbreaks of the most deadly variety of bird flu (subtype H5N1) occurred among poultry in Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Japan, Kazakhstan, Laos, Malaysia, Romania, Russia, South Korea, Thailand, Turkey, and Vietnam. Hundreds of millions of birds in those countries died from the disease or were killed in attempts to control the epidemics. Similar culling events have taken place since then, including culls in countries in Africa, Asia, and the Middle East.

HOW THE VIRUS SPREADS.
Up to half of the people who get this virus die from the illness. Your risk of getting the bird flu virus is higher if: You work with poultry (such as farmers), You travel to places where the virus is present, You touch an infected bird, You eat raw or undercooked poultry meat, eggs, or blood from infected birds, Health care workers and people who live in the same house as
people with bird flu may also be at higher risk of infection. The avian flu virus (H5N1) lives in the environment for long periods of time. Infection may be spread just by touching surfaces that have the virus on them. Birds who were infected with this flu can give off the virus in their feces and saliva for as long as 10 days.

WATCH OUT FOR THE FOLLOWING SYMPTOMS
The symptoms of avian flu infection in humans depend on the strain of virus. The H5N1 virus in humans causes typical flu-like symptoms such as:
Cough
Diarrhea
Trouble breathing
Fever greater than 100.4°F (38°C)
Headache
General ill feeling (malaise)
Muscle aches
Runny nose
Sore throat
Acute respiratory failure
Organ failure
Pneumonia
Sepsis

If you think you have been exposed to the virus, call your health care provider before your visit. This will give the staff a chance to take steps to protect themselves and other patients during your visit. There are tests for the avian flu but they are not widely available. Your doctor might do the following tests: Auscultation (to detect abnormal breath sounds), Chest x-ray, Nasopharyngeal virus detection by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), Nasopharyngeal culture, throat virus detection by RT-PCR, White blood cell differential. Other tests may be done to look at how well your heart, kidneys, and liver are working.

TREATMENT OF BIRD FLU
The treatment administered varies based on your symptoms. In general, treatment with the antiviral medication oseltamivir (Tamiflu) or zanamivir (Relenza) may make the disease less severe. You need to start taking the medicine within 48 hours after your symptoms start for it to work effectively. Oseltamivir may also be prescribed for persons who live in the same house people with avian flu. This may prevent them from getting the illness. The virus that causes human avian flu is resistant to the antiviral medicines amantadine and rimantadine. These medicines should not be used in the case of an H5N1 outbreak. People with severe infection may need to be placed on a breathing machine. People infected with the virus also should be kept separate from non-infected people.

N.B
Please be informed that the spread of avian influenza is essentially through contact between the birds and people that attend to them. Immediately the meat is cooked, the infection dies. Please endeavor to cook your poultry meat and product very well before serving.

RAPE: The effects and Help for Victims

WHAT ARE THE EFFECTS OF RAPE?
The devastating consequences of rape cannot be summarized in a single post but for the sake of brevity and directness, I've enumerated below the effects of sexual assault on its victims. They include;
-Trauma
-Psychological harm.
-Physical injury.
-Post traumatic stress disorder. (PTSD)
-Acquisition of sexually transmitted diseases.
-Difficulty in normal functioning as well as they had been used to prior the assault.
-Disruption in concentration, sleeping patterns and eating habits.
-Acute stress disorder similar to PTSD such as intense, unpredictable emotions, hard to deal with their memories of events in months following the assault. These problems may be severe and upsetting and may prevent the victim from revealing the ordeal to friends or family or seeking police or medical assistance.
-Depersonalization and dissociation: Feelings of numbness and detachment, being in a daze or dream state and feeling that the world is unreal or strange.
-Repeated thoughts, memories or nightmares.
-Conscious avoidance of things, places, thoughts and feelings that remind the victim of the assault.
-Anxiety or increased alertness (difficulty in sleeping and concentration).
-Avoidance of social life or place of rape

SEEKING HELP FOR VICTIMS (THE WAY FORWARD)
Since most rape cases go unnoticed and unreported due to the social stigma attached to it. Also, the victim is being prejudiced upon by the society, but here are a few hints on overcoming the numerous effect of rape.

Firstly, accept the reality of the occurrence, yes you've been molested and your fundamental human rights have been trampled upon, this shouldn't be the end of the world. There is hope for you dear victim. Children should be taught sex education from a tender age and parents should create an unending chain of rapport with their female children especially, as they are the victims most of the time. Endeavor to teach your young ones on decision making and assertiveness. Let NO mean NO and not "STOP don't STOP" if you know what that means... Young ladies would anyways. Lol

Secondly, report every cases of abuse and molestation to an elderly person, trusted one or constituted authorities, the earlier the better for your healing process. You must be willing to report and describe the assault against all the odds. Don't let perpetrators of rape and sexual abuse go unpunished. Biological evidence such as semen, blood, vaginal secretions, saliva and vaginal epithelial cells (May be identified and genetically tested by a criminal lab). The information derived from analysis can often help determine whether sexual contact occurred. Provide information regarding circumstances of incident and compare to reference samples collected from patients/suspects.

Thirdly, seek help. Seek medical and psychological help as soon as possible. Spiritual help shouldn't be overlooked as God is capable of healing to the soul and healing beyond the power of pharmaceutical drugs. Pray and depend on God for help and guidance.
There are a few organizations in Nigeria that will be willing to help victims of sexual abuse. Try to contact them for help and the devastating effects of rape would be minimized.

Lastly, a word of advice for the young ladies. Though provocative dressing is not a reason for sexual assault of any kind, be decent and modest in your dressing and appearance. Remember, the way you dress is the way you'll be addressed!

CAUSES AND TYPES OF RAPE

The word RAPE erupts feelings of emptiness and psychological trauma to the heart of many, most especially it's victims. RAPE is an antisocial act perpetuated by psychopaths. Because, no normal human being would be willing to forcefully have sexual intercourse with a lady without her consent. It really sucks in my own opinion!

This write up will primarily consider the definition, statistics, effects on its victims, types of rape, prevention and treatment of rape. Rape is not taken lightly in developed nations of the world. Unfortunately, reverse happens to be the situation in our continent - Africa as many of these cases go unreported due to victimization, oppression, stigmatization and a weak law that doesn't punish offenders seriously. Rape should not be taken with levity due to its grave consequences. Victims should endeavor to seek justice by reporting cases of rape to appropriate authorities (police) so as to curb and curtail this antisocial menace that is plaguing our society on a more alarming rate.

DEFINITION
Without further ado, the word RAPE originates from the Latin "rapere" (supine stem raptum)  meaning to snatch, to grab, to carry off. Rape is a type of "sexual assault" usually involving "sexual intercourse" or other forms of sexual penetration perpetuated against a person without that person's "consent". The act may be carried out by physical force, coercion, abuse of authority or against a person who is incapable of "valid consent", such as one who is unconscious, incapacitated or below the legal age of consent (18 years in Nigeria and many other countries ).

Furthermore, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime defines rape as sexual intercourse without valid consent. Meanwhile, the World Health Organization in 2002 defines rape as physically forced or otherwise coerced penetration even if slightly of vulva or anus, using penis, other body parts or an object. From the above definitions, one can correctly deduce certain keywords in the definition of rape which includes: coercion, use of force and lack of sexual consent.

CAUSES OF RAPE AND SEXUAL VIOLENCE
Having examined the definition of RAPE, it's imperative to study and consider the causes of rape. Rape is synonymous to sexual violence as both words can be used interchangeably. Therefore, some of the causes of sexual violence may include;
1. Beliefs in family honour and sexual purity as in cases of incestual rape.
2. Ideologies of male sexual entitlement as found in most cases of spousal rape. Are you amazed? Yes, it's very possible for a husband to rape his wife.
3. Weak legal sanctions for sexual offenders.
4. Chauvinistic mentality by psychopaths.
5. Anger, hatred and desire for power. Sometimes, anger is being fueled by hatred towards the victim.
6. Sadism.
7. Sexual gratification and luxury. A feeling of sexual satisfaction by the offender.
8. Psychopathy- a mental disorder in which an individual manifests amoral and antisocial behavior, lack of ability to love or establish meaningful personal relationships, extreme egocentricity, failure to learn from experience, etc.
9. Drug facilitated sexual assault DFSA ( Predator rape). The offender's sense of judgement is being clouded and impaired, caused by the use of either drug/alcohol or both. The offender has no total control of his behaviors and actions, hence he or she may commit rape.
Most importantly, 99% of rapists are male and only on few and awkward situations will you find female sexual offenders.

TYPES OF RAPE
There are many types and forms of rape that are based on ethnicity, beliefs and situations. Some of this may stupefy you. Below are some of the most common types of rape in the world.
1. DATE RAPE: usually occurs during or after a date between two people.

2. MARITAL (SPOUSAL) RAPE: yes! Married couples can be guilty of spousal rape too. In a situation where the wife is unwilling to have sexual intercourse and the husband forcefully engage her, it is a criminal offense which is least common in our African society. It is also a non consensual sex where the perpetrator is the victim's spouse.

3. GANG RAPE: Members of a gang perpetuate their evil lustful desires on a lady in order to humiliate and molest her.

4. INCESTUAL RAPE: usually comes with the act of incest. Sex between members of a family or people related by blood. For example, Father-daughter, brother-sister, uncle-cousin  sexual relationships etc.

5. WAR RAPE: It is carried out during war and in war zones by militants and rebels.

6. PRISON RAPE: Often times, a correctional facility is the habitation of sexual molestation, rape, sodomy, homo sexuality and what have you. Inmates are being raped without report and notification of the prison authorities.

7. ACQUAINTANCE RAPE: This usually occurs between someone you don't really know much about. The perpetrator might be staying in your neighborhood or someone you know few details about. I refer to this type as opportunistic rapist.

8. STATUTORY RAPE: A cynical psychopath whose life has been abashed to a level of hopelessness, who enjoys torturing his victims before carrying out his lustful desire. This sect of rapists need both psychological and medical evaluation over a long period of time.

9. CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE: This is the most common form of abuse. The vulnerability of these children are taken advantage of by an unsuspecting adult. This creates a deep sense of fear on the children as they are not bold or knowledgeable enough to express the scene to either of their parents.

Subsequently, watch out for the final part of this writing which will consider the effects of rape and solutions or remedy to victims. Stay blessed!
