MONDAY INFLUENTIAL: SANJAY GUPTA



This man happens to be one of the most celebrated doctors in the Western world but little is known about his works and achievements here in Africa. Join me as I briefly take you through the profile of this surgeon and journalist. He was named one of 10 most influential celebrities by Forbes Magazine

NAME: Sanjay Gupta
American neurosurgeon and chief medical correspondent for CNN (Cable News Network). Gupta was best known for his captivating reports on health and medical topics, as well as his appearances on multiple CNN television shows, including American Morning and House Call with Dr. Sanjay Gupta, which he hosted.

D.O.B: October 23, 1969, Novi, Michigan, U.S.

NATIONALITY: American 

EARLY CHILDHOOD : Gupta grew up in Novi, Michigan, located on the outskirts of Detroit, where his parents, immigrants from India and Pakistan, worked as engineers for the Ford Motor Company. His parents instilled in him a strong work ethic and a deep desire to learn. In Gupta’s final year of high school, he was accepted into an eight-year medical program called Inteflex at the University of Michigan. This enabled him to secure a spot in the university’s medical school while still a student in high school.

ACADEMIC PROFILE: University of Michigan (B.S) (M.D)

OCCUPATION: Journalist and neurosurgeon.

CAREER ACHIEVEMENTS: In late 1980s during his undergraduate studies, he wrote for the university's newspaper, reporting on health issues.
- he met Bill Clinton (then governor of Arkansas) and his wife Hillary Rodham Clinton in 1989.
- received White House fellowship during Bill Clinton's second term as the president of the United States. He worked as special adviser to Hillary Clinton, helping the First Lady to write speeches on health care and medical issues.
- In 2001, he became a CNN ( Cable News Network) correspondent covering the September 11 attacks in New York City.
- He reported from Iraq, the U.S- led invasion in 2003.
- Performed brain surgery on injured soldiers.
- Subsequently reported on the AIDS pandemic in 2004
          Hurricane Katrina 2005,
          Haiti earthquake of 2010,
          Japan earthquake and tsunami 2011.
- Emmy award winner of 2010.
- Columnist in Time Magazine.
- He turned down a nomination for consideration as Surgeon General of the United States during this present Obama administration.
